Hiking Guides often field questions on items they love out on the trails. Leading us to create a new newsletter segment: Our Favorite Things. It is our hope you will feel more confident as consumers. ENJOY! GaitersS.A. Hiking Guides Monica McConkey I love my gaiters! They are basically a guard that keeps the lower part of your leg down to your boots dry. Most gaiters have an adjustable strap that loops below your boot in the arch. Some have a hook that will snag your laces to keep them in place on the top part of your boot. The front velcro closes up the center. And the tops have some type of adjustable closure that you can snug up to ensure snow stays out. There are many different styles, weights, and lengths depending on what you are using them for. My recommendation is to be sure they are completely waterproof and tall enough to cover the tops of your boots. Bombas Women’s Hiking Calf SocksS.A. Hiking Guide Kim Gilbertson I love having warm, comfortable feet, so these socks are perfect for cold Minnesota winters. My first pair of Bombas socks were a running version, and I loved how they formed my feet, provided support, and allowed my feet to breathe. The hiking socks function the same. The “Hex Tec” technology ventilates and wicks away moisture. This keeps your feet toasty in the winter and cools in warmer weather. The seamless toe is nice so you do not feel that bump in your hiking boots; plus, the colors they come in are fun and cute. An added bonus that I love is that Bombas donates one pair of socks for every pair purchased to the homeless community! SOREL Women’s Joan of Arctic Insulated Waterproof Winter BootS.A. Hiking Guide Maggie Heald One of the few things I enjoy about Winter is being able to put my SOREL boots on. I bought my usual size 7 and with regular everyday socks the boot is a little big, but I still wear them comfortably and when I add in my warm thick socks they are perfect. I have had my pair for three years and only now do I feel like I need to replace them. I wear them on hikes, dog walks, and everyday wear. Don’t be afraid to look for a deal on them online. YaktraxS.A. Hiking Guide Mel Bexell These are a must-have for me during the winter months. They are super easy to get onto your boots and have the extra protection of staying put with the Velcro strap. When you don’t know what is under that snow, these will give you peace of mind that you will have more stability while you are out enjoying our winter wonderland! Baby Bjorn Carrier Free PackS.A. Hiking Guide Caitlin Hickcox When hiking with little ones, a front-pack carrier is a must, and this carrier is so easy to use and comfortable for parents and babies. I have used this carrier with our daughter since she was about 3 months old. Babies can face inwards (for very young babies or for comfort/nap time) or outwards as they get older and to take in all the nature while hiking with you. I’ve hiked up to 6 miles with my baby in the carrier and both of us were comfortable. For winter, you can easily wrap a blanket around the baby’s lower half. She Ascends is here to help you EXPLORE
